. The HARARE SPCA strongly advises the public to take
the time to have all pets micro chipped. It is also advisable to put a collar
with ID tag on them. Some members of the public have been very considerate and
have picked up lost, frightened and injured animals wandering on the streets.
If you are one of these caring people , kindly drop the lost animal at your
nearest vet and ask them to contact the Harare SPCA. Photos of lost and found
animals can be placed on the Harare Spca Face book page .Add any information
that will help to reunite the animal with its owner. Never hand over an animal
without ASKING FOR PROOF OF OWNERSHIP (photo, vaccination certificate or a call
to the person’s vet) PLEASE DO NOT TRY AND REHOME
THE PET YOURSELF. You could be giving
away someone’s beloved pet whilst they are away and unaware that it is lost.
You do not know whether the animal has been injured or not and whether it
is up to date with vaccinations. The Harare SPCA will take care of the
animal and hopefully the owners will claim it. Lost animals are
immediately checked by our vets. They then spend some time in quarantine,
where they are observed, assessed and vaccinated. If no one claims the pet
after its “ pound time, ”the Harare SPCA puts the animal into the re-homing
section . Pets are only adopted out to homes that have been checked for
suitability by our qualified inspectors. Adult animals are neutered or spayed
before they leave our kennels. People taking pups and kittens must sign a sterilization
contract. There are dozens of pups and kittens waiting for homes at our
kennels. The growing population of unwanted animals has reached a critical
level. Please do NOT breed or buy whilst shelter pets die. If you have lost a
pet please visit the kennels( if the pet is recently lost pop into our
surgery where animals spend their time in quarantine before moving to our
kennels) Many animals share a similar description and only an owner can easily
identify them. Lost pets often resurface months later when owners have given up
looking for them. A phone call is not enough unless the missing pet has very
distinguishing markings or characteristics. The Harare Spca and reputable
vets scan all incoming strays for a microchip. It is a quick and easy way of
reuniting pets with their owners.
